About Hilbre

Hilbre is part of a tiny archipelago off the Wirral coast, where the River Dee, the River Mersey, and the Irish Sea converge. Formerly known as the Cheshire Islands, Hilbre has long been studied for its rich wildlife, particularly its bird and crustacean populations, with notable research by J. D. Craggs.

Following the acquisition of a long-term lease of the Buoymasters House and Workshop, BADA (British Art & Design Association) is developing CASS (Centre of Arts, Science & Sustainability). CASS supports creative conservation and heritage through artist and scientist collaboration, independent artistic practice, and scientific research.

Work currently underway includes a growing archive, soil studies, and heritage development for the buildings, alongside artist-researchers who come to engage with Hilbre’s diverse ecologies and distinctive island culture. At its heart, CASS aims to nurture care for Hilbre through an artistic lens, fostering interdisciplinary projects that connect ecology, science, sustainability, and place.
